Written by Justin West
Friday, 30 March 2007

We now have a new Classifieds section available under the User Menu for Registered Users (ie. you don't have to be a paid member of the MVWS)! Any registered users can post a classified ad indicating whether they are selling something or are looking to buy a used product.

I currently only have two categories listed: Winemaking supplies and Fruit. If anyone has a new category you feel will benefit the group as a whole, feel free to request it by emailing me through the Contacts page.

I hope this section will benefit many of our members and readers!

A dairy in Boonville, New York has spent the last two years developing wine-flavored ice cream! They have three wine flavors right now: Ala Port Wine, Peachy White Zinfandel, and Red Raspberry Chardonnay. Marketing consultants think Mercer's Ice Cream may have a national product on their hands and the new wine flavors are already being scooped in New York City restaurants.

Updating your Geo Map location PDF Print E-mail
Written by Justin West
Friday, 23 March 2007

At the last meeting, I heard from various people about how the pin representing their location was way off as far as accuracy goes. I recently found out how you can easily find your location and update your latitude and longitude geographic coordinates and wanted to give everyone the steps so they can update their pin location on the Geo Map.

  1. Open another web browser and go to http://maps.google.com
  2. Search for your address like '123 Street Name, Warrenton, MO' and you will see a green pin indicate where Google Maps thinks the location is.
  3. Double-Click on the map where your location actually is. Feel free to zoom in as much as possible to get your coordinates with the most accuracy and switch to the Satellite view if it helps. By Double-Clicking, the map will zoom in again, and also center the map on the location where you clicked.
  4. Just above the upper right corder of the map will be a link that says 'Link to this Page'. Go ahead and click on this link so it will show up as the address of your browser.
  5. Now here's the important part. Look through this URL and find the part that looks something like this: '&ll=38.823878,-91.045332&'. The numbers after the 'll=' are your latitude and longitude coordinates of the location you Double-Clicked on the map!
  6. Now, to update your profile with these coordinates, click on the User List and click on your name. At the top of the screen is a menu called 'Edit'. On that menu, choose 'Update Your Profile'. Click on the Geocoding Tab and enter your coordinates there. The first number is your latitude and the second number is your longitude. So with the current example, I would enter 38.823878 as my latitude, and -91.045332 as my longitude.
  7. Click the Update button and your new coordinates will be saved.

Sometimes it will take a while for the map to actually show your change. However, if you do not see your change in 24 hours, feel free to send me an email and I will be happy to take a look at it and see if I can fix it.

Hope this helps!

March MVWS Meeting in Warrenton Journal PDF Print E-mail
Written by Justin West
Thursday, 15 March 2007

If you attended the March meeting last week, you were informed that the Warrenton Journal had a photographer and journalist present to write an article on the Missouri Valley Wine Society. That article is now published and can be read online if you live in an area that does not receive the Warrenton Journal. The article turned out great, and a big thanks to everyone who took a few minutes to be interviewed by the journalist!

The article can be found HERE!
