Pruning is the first and most important process of the season for managing a grape vine's fruit production, vigor, and long-term health

1) The following topics will first be presented and discussed in the class room:

Fruiting habits of grapes

Stored nutrient reserves

The Balanced Pruning concept

Selecting fruiting wood

Counting buds

Shoot spacing and bud distribution within the vine

Light exposure

Shoot Thinning

Shoot positioning (combing)

Leaf removal

2) The Demonstration Vineyard

Pruning demo in the Vineyard

Vine training and Trellising systems demonstrated

Instructor: Paul Hendricks, Master Gardener, long time grape grower and winemaker.

Fee: $20 per person, which goes to support the Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens and Vineyard on the University Extension Center grounds in St Peters MO.  Master Gardeners is a volunteer program supported by the University of Missouri.
